Volunteer Opportunities:

We welcome individuals with all levels of expertise, groups looking for a team-building activity, and students who want to learn more about social work, nonprofit administration, event planning, and teaching. Areas of opportunity are listed below.

  • Kitchen & Food Pantry: Our Kitchen provides three hot meals daily for all shelter guests. Our Food Pantry is open to those in need in our community.  Kitchen volunteer shifts run daily at the following times; 8:00am-10:00am, 10:00am-1:00pm, & 3:00pm-6:00pm.

  • Cleaning: Assistance from groups or individuals is always needed for cleaning in our offices and in the shelter. 

  • Office & Administrative:  Help with data entry, document creation, website maintenance, internet research and various development projects.

  • Special Activities: Individuals and groups can share their expertise and interests with our residents. This can include art, music, educational activities, or playing games. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator with any ideas you have.

  • Areas of Expertise: Experienced individuals or groups are welcomed to offer assistance with grant writing, health & hygiene services, and social work.

Who Can Volunteer?

We rely on individuals and groups to volunteer. You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer. Youth under the age of 18 must have a parent signature and an adult present to volunteer.

What’s the Process?

First, fill out an application so we know what your availability and interest is. Once you have filled out the application, you will schedule a time for a half-hour long orientation. Orientation takes place by appointment. Once you have received an orientation, you will be put on the schedule to volunteer in your area of interest.

What’s the Time Commitment?

The time commitment for volunteers varies on their interest and availability. Volunteering can be on a daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly schedule.

What Should I Wear?

Wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothes. Some of our volunteer opportunities involve standing for long periods of time, lifting, and cleaning. It is a good idea to wear clothing you do not mind getting dirty.

What Should I Bring?

We do not have a place for volunteers to store their items, and House of Mercy is not responsible for anything lost or stolen. It is a good idea to not bring in anything of value or anything you cannot keep with you during your shift.

Where Should I Park?

You are welcome to use the two small parking lots on either side of our main location, 285 Ormond Street. However, if these are full, street parking is always available on both sides of the street.
